First time in 10 months: Manchester United have just taken a big step forward

Manchester United picked up a much-needed win at the weekend with another away victory.

Erik ten Hag‘s Manchester United secured a vital win away at Sheffield United on Saturday, winning 2-1 thanks to a superb strike from Diogo Dalot.

The win took Manchester United up into eighth place, gradually working our way up the Premier League table after a woeful, injury-hit start to the campaign.

On a day overshadowed by Sir Bobby Charlton’s death, Manchester United were proud and relieved to come away with the three points.

Back to back away wins

The win over Sheffield United made it back to back away wins in the Premier League, following on from a 1-0 victory at Burnley late last month.

Remarkably, this was the first time Manchester United had recorded successive away league wins since last December.

It says a lot about Manchester United’s struggles on the road that it has taken so long to put a couple of victories together.

There has been a lot said about United’s failure to win games away against the ‘big teams’. But clearly, our away form has been inconsistent across the board.

You have to start resetting this somewhere, and while you would want to be winning at Burnley and Sheffield United, these aren’t easy games, not when they are late 8pm kick-offs with a vocal crowd urging the home team on.

Winning away games is important for team spirit, and these confidence boosting victories have helped the team move up the table, ever so slightly.

If United are going to win the ‘big games’ away from home, we at least need to be winning the more straightforward ones, and this is some progress.

Separately, Manchester United have also recorded back to back victories for the first time in the Premier League this season, with a win at home to Brentford prior to this away win at Sheffield United.

Manchester United upcoming fixtures

Manchester United have two home matches upcoming this week, hosting FC Copenhagen in the Champions League and then Manchester City in the Premier League.

A home match against Newcastle in the Carabao Cup then follows at the start of November.

After a wobble at Old Trafford in September, it is vital to go on a winning streak in these upcoming matches.
