Manchester United are ‘discussing’ a deal for Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting as the Premier League giants eye up a deal for Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga-winning centre-forward.
While comparisons with Odion Ighalo and Wout Weghorst feel rather inevitable, Bayern’s evergreen Cameroon international is not necessarily the latest in an increasingly long line of underwhelming, 30-something gap-pluggers.
Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting scored 17 times as Bayern claimed another Bundesliga title last term after all. And while he would hardly be a long-term solution to Manchester United’s issues in the final third – Choupo-Moting turns 35 in a few months’ time – age is but a number, as Edinson Cavani and Zlatan Ibrahimovic proved during their spells at Old Trafford.

Manchester United eye Bayern Munich striker
“Bayern Munich striker Eric Choupo-Moting is one of many names being discussed internally (by Man United),” Romano writes in his Caught Offside column.
“It’s nothing concrete, nothing advanced yet. Still, Bayern have Harry Kane and Mathys Tel as options up front, so obviously there’s not so much space for Choupo-Moting. And Man United have been informed of his situation.
“At the moment it’s not a negotiation, from what I’m told. But it may become one to watch.”
Man United, funnily enough, have been linked with both Kane and Tel since the end of last season. Choupo-Moting, who once scored twice against the Red Devils during his ill-fated spell at Stoke City in 2017/18, may now be allowed to leave Bayern after falling behind the aforementioned duo in Thomas Tuchel’s pecking order.
United also reportedly have an interest in Serhou Guirassy, Mauro Icardi and Timo Werner, the former Chelsea frontman lined up for a return to England.
United want a forward
“There has also been some contact with Timo Werner’s agent,” Romano adds. “But no negotiation with RB Leipzig.
“In general, a loan signing up front looks like a possibility for United this January.”
According to The Athletic, Guirassy could be too expensive for United this month, despite a £15 million release clause in his Stuttgart contract.
