As Manchester United reflect on another defeat, the club must plot a path forward to aim for sustained future success.
Manchester City’s win over United at the weekend is a by-product of how well differently run the two clubs have been in recent years.
Manchester United have wasted untold millions, illustrated by £82 million substitute Antony, a winger with no goals or assists in the Premier League this season.
Cheaper, smarter deals can play a part, and new investors Ineos have a plan to help United recruit more sensibly.

Manchester United looking to explore global market
Work is ongoing at Manchester United to prepare for the summer transfer market, and Ineos want to scour the globe for bargains.
In the past United have identified potential players, but not seen the deals through, with Moises Caicedo one glaring error.
Caicedo signed for Brighton for £5 million, where he featured in four different victories over Manchester United, before signing for Chelsea for an incredible £115 million last summer.
According to Fabrizio Romano, via YouTube, United plan to use the network of clubs Ineos have, with Nice and Lausanne, to develop potential top talents.
He said: “Under Ineos United will try to work also to bring in some top talents, young players, to join the Manchester United galaxy, because now they can also use obviously the connection they have with Nice in France.
Romano add that United would give them “the chance to go to Nice on a loan to have the opportunity to develop there, so Manchester United will take a special eye to talents around the world, because they feel that they had many opportunities in the recent past.
“Just an example a player like Moises Caicedo, who was really close to joining Manchester United years ago when he was still in Ecuador, for something close to five million, Manchester United decided against.”
This was a big error of judgement from United, but the club have had a distrust of the South American market generally, with only one player signed directly from the continent over the past 15 years, Facundo Pellistri – and he has not had a straightforward time since his 2020 arrival.
How Ineos strategy could work
Manchester United failed to sign Moises Caicedo in early 2021, but even if they had, would he have been successful at Old Trafford?
Moises Caicedo developed at Brighton where there was not such a bright spotlight as there is at Manchester United, where players are under a huge spotlight and expected to hit the ground running.
Potential young signings being sent out to Nice or Lausanne can work to their benefit, and ultimately to Manchester United’s, if they prove to be good enough.
It is encouraging the club have a plan to look further afield and play the long game to develop future stars. There’s no guarantee it works, and will depend on the quality of players brought in, but having a strategy is better than sticking with what the club is currently doing.
