Fabrizio Romano explains what is ‘likely’ to happen with Christian Eriksen in latest Man United contract update

Christian Eriksen has been one of the biggest surprise packages at Manchester United this season.

Everything pointed towards the 32-year-old midfielder tumbling down Erik ten Hag‘s pecking order this season.

Manchester United overhauled their midfield by selling Scott McTominay and replacing him with a £42m deal for Manuel Ugarte, who was expected to become a nailed-on starter at Old Trafford.

Ugarte is slowly being implemented into the squad by Ten Hag, but he may find it difficult to uproot Christian Eriksen from the starting lineup.

Eriksen is having a season nobody expected with the Denmark international surprisingly creating more chances than Bruno Fernandes this season. He has pushed his way to the forefront of Ten Hag’s plans despite being linked with an exit over the summer.

Christian Eriksen almost left Manchester United this summer

United always wanted to sell a midfielder in the summer to make space for Ugarte, and McTominay ended up leaving on deadline day to join Italian side Napoli.

However, Eriksen was linked to former club Ajax in the summer but decided to fight for his spot at Old Trafford – a decision that he has since justified.

There were also reports linking Eriksen with a late move to Turkey, but United’s number 14 stayed put in Manchester.

Eriksen is in the final year of his contract and could leave as a free agent in 2025 if a new deal is not offered. Eriksen has hinted at contract talks, but no progress has yet been made.

Fabrizio Romano latest update on Christian Eriksen contract talks

United find themselves in a tricky situation with Eriksen. He has easily been one of the standout performers this season but at 32 years old he is entering the twilight years of his career.

Eriksen would be free to discuss a pre-contract agreement with a new club in January if his situation is still not sorted, but it seems the hierarchy at Old Trafford are in no rush.

According to Fabrizio Romano, there have still been “no contacts” between the United board and Eriksen over a new deal.

Via X, Romano posted: “No contacts ongoing now between Man United board and Christian Eriksen over new deal.

“Current contract expires in June 2025 and it’s likely for Eriksen to leave the club as free agent.”

Romano suggests that the most “likely” situation is still for Eriksen to leave next summer despite his impressive displays this season.
