Fabrizio Romano has now reacted to former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag being linked with a sensational return to the Premier League this season.
Erik ten Hag suffered a major setback in his post-Old Trafford managerial career after the Dutchman’s recent stint at Bayer Leverkusen lasted less than 10 weeks.
The 55-year-old former Ajax manager made his return to the dugout in May with Bayer Leverkusen and succeeded Xabi Alonso, who had left for Real Madrid.
Fast-forward from his appointment in May to September and Ten Hag’s reign at the Bundesliga outfit came to a crashing halt with his sacking in the 2025-26 season.
The former Manchester United manager had only managed two Bundesliga matches – three across all competitions – for Leverkusen before he was axed from the role.
Ten Hag’s appointment at Leverkusen was the former Utrecht and Go Ahead Eagles boss’ most recent role after he was sacked from United in the 2024-25 season.

Fabrizio Romano explains what is happening between former Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag and Wolves
Erik ten Hag has been linked with Wolves after Vitor Pereira was sacked from the Premier League club following the team’s 3-0 defeat to Fulham on Saturday.
Ex-Wolves boss Gary O’Neil had been tipped for a sensational return to the Molineux after Vitor Pereira’s exit from the Premier League club was confirmed on Sunday.
However, Gary O’Neil has since pulled out of the running for the vacant Wolves head coach role and Ten Hag could now be in contention to succeed Pereira at the club.
Fabrizio Romano explained what he has been hearing about a potential return to the Premier League for former Manchester United head coach Ten Hag.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, he said: “We had stories in the last 24 hours about Erik ten Hag as an option for [the] Wolves job.
“My understanding is that there was a conversation, a contact, to understand the eventual availability of Erik ten Hag for the Wolves job.
“But it didn’t advance on both [the] manager and club side at this stage on Tuesday morning lunchtime.
“There is nothing agreed, nothing advanced between Erik ten Hag and Wolves.”

Fabrizio Romano talks about Erik ten Hag at Bayer Leverkusen and the former Man Utd manager’s stance amid Wolves interest
Romano suggested that Ten Hag was “not happy” with how his ill-fated spell at Bayer Leverkusen came to an end after he succeeded Xabi Alonso at the club.
“So, Erik ten Hag would be open to return to work after the Bayer Leverkusen shocking story – fired before the end of the summer transfer window by Bayer Leverkusen,” he continued.
“So, it was a shocking story for Erik ten Hag. He was not happy at all about the situation.”
Despite the managerial setback with Leverkusen, Romano believes that the former United boss could make his return to management in the foreseeable future.
“He would be ready to return at work, but no agreement with Wolves and at the moment [there] is nothing advanced,” he added.
“So, at this stage I’m not aware of Erik ten Hag being closer to being back to Premier League football.”
Ten Hag was dismissed from United in October 2024 and the former Leverkusen boss was succeeded by ex-Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim only a month later.
