Ex-Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher had a telling reaction to the polarising red card decision in Bournemouth and Manchester United’s clash on Sunday.

Bournemouth hosted Manchester United at the Vitality Stadium and Andoni Iraola’s men took control of the Premier League tie for a large portion of the match.

The Cherries broke the deadlock in the first half against United after Antoine Semenyo fired a stunning strike past a helpless Andre Onana in the 23rd minute.

Bournemouth were 1-0 up at half time before Andoni Iraola’s side were hindered in the second half after a sending off in the 70th minute on the weekend.

Evanilson was dismissed for his challenge at the Vitality Stadium and United snatched a point against 10-man Bournemouth in the dying stages of the match.

Struggling United striker Rasmus Hojlund scored the all-important equaliser in second-half stoppage time and Ruben Amorim’s men secured a 1-1 draw.

The Red Devils are now 14th in the Premier League table under Ruben Amorim and United have only four league matches remaining in their 2024-25 campaign.

United have suffered a whopping 15 Premier League defeats and the Red Devils have picked up only 10 wins from 34 league matches in a lacklustre season.

Dermot Gallagher asked about Evanilson’s red card after his tackle on Noussair Mazraoui in Bournemouth and Man Utd’s draw

VAR and John Brooks called for referee Peter Bankes to review his decision on Evanilson after the Bournemouth player’s challenge on Noussair Mazraoui.

Peter Bankes walked back on his initial verdict and the Premier League official brandished a red card to Evanilson and Bournemouth were down to 10 men.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Ref Watch, Dermot Gallagher surprisingly admitted that he felt that Bankes and VAR were right to send off the 25-year-old Brazilian striker.

“I thought it was a red card,” he said.

“I know he slips, but because he slips, he goes through with the challenge. He’s hit him with his studs.

“It’s dangerous. It could have been a lot worse [for Mazraoui]. He’s gone in too forceful for me.”

Responding to Gallagher’s verdict on the red card, Sue Smith said on Sky Sports: “I think this is a really poor decision.

“He slips and naturally, that’s the way his legs would go. When you see the still, it looks awful.

“But a yellow card at most. I think the ref got it right on the field. At no point VAR says Evanilson slipped.

“That should have been the first thing they said to him.”

What did Ruben Amorim say on the red card in Bournemouth and Man Utd’s Premier League match at the Vitality Stadium?

Speaking after Sunday’s 1-1 draw, United manager Ruben Amorim refused to speak out on whether Peter Bankes and VAR made the wrong call in the match.

“I never comment on referees, no matter if we draw, lose or win,” he said, as per Manchester United’s official website.

“You can see the path, I will try to be like that until the end, so I have nothing to say.”

United will now resume their crucial Europa League campaign on Thursday evening, with Athletic Club hosting the Red Devils for their first-leg semi-final clash.
