Rio Ferdinand took issue with an Aston Villa supporter last night, reacting to a radio phone in.

The former Manchester United captain was stunned by the suggestion Grealish could choose to stay at Aston Villa this summer instead of move to Old Trafford.

The Mirror has reported Grealish is United’s top midfield transfer target this summer.

Who does this help?

Ferdinand is talking up United as a top destination for players, despite a lack of recent success.

We need more former United players acting in the same way in the media, talking the club up instead of constantly sniping and criticising.

He is speaking from experience after quitting Leeds to sign with Manchester United back in 2002, wanting to play at a higher level.

On the other hand, Ferdinand’s comment contains an element of arrogance to it.

Villa fans reading it will probably be annoyed with the dismissive tone it takes towards their own club.

The Midlands side are busy trying to avoid relegation and Grealish is central to their plans.

The last thing they need is transfer speculation unsettling him at a crucial time. It can and should wait.

Money talks, and if United meet Villa’s asking price a deal will probably get done in the summer whether they stay up or go down.

But at the same time, Ferdinand’s comment is a little disrespectful towards them and may cause them to dig in and make a transfer a little more difficult.

If they stay up, it may even give them added resolve to keep him and prove Rio wrong.
