‘Even before that…’ Fabrizio Romano’s latest update on Marcus Rashford changes everything

Manchester United had a marquee victory at Manchester City and will face Tottenham in a crunch Carabao Cup knockout game but Marcus Rashford is the one dominating headlines.

Marcus Rashford being dropped from the Man Utd squad for the City game fanned the flames of a potential dissension between the club and the player.

Rashford’s immediate messages after the win calmed those fears somewhat but then came the bombshell reports that United were open to selling Rashford.

Ruben Amorim insisted Rashford remains in his plans but the player’s comments of seeking a new challenge are hard to back down from, especially the timing of it.

However, Fabrizio Romano’s latest update on the whole situation changes everything and warrants a reevaluation of the whole timeline.

Fabrizio Romano on Marcus Rashford at Man Utd

With so much noise coming from every side of this story, the crux of the matter has been lost to an extent, which is that a player who’s Man Utd through and through could be set for an anti-climactic end to his career at his boyhood club.

Rio Ferdinand recently detailed Rashford’s biggest issue at Old Trafford and the fact is that the player just looks to have lost his joy for the game at the club.

Amorim said after the game that his absence had nothing to do with disciplinary stuff, and the door for his return remains open provided he impresses in training.

He reiterated that message before the game against Spurs which has led fans to believe that even though Rashford has one foot out of the exit door, he can turn it around.

However, Fabrizio Romano’s latest update paints a picture much more ominous than first believed. He said Rashford’s message of seeking a new challenge was ‘extremely strong’ but the club’s stance on it is even more stern.

He said: “A very strong message [by Rashford]. Looks like he confirms that he’s opening the door to a Man Utd exit.

“What I can say is that on the club side, they’re absolutely feeling the same. Not now, not even on Sunday [Manchester City game], it’s even before that that Manchester United feel that 2025 January or summer, based on proposals, could be time to part ways with Rashford.”

Romano’s Rashford update changes everything

It was thought that the spark that ignited all these flames was Rashford being dropped for the City game and Amorim didn’t say anything differently.

He said after the game that they kept trying Rashford in the first XI but when it didn’t work, they changed, which is understandable and just a general course of action any competent manager and club would take.

However, if Romano’s update is correct and the club had made a decision on their player long before all this happened, it means that the six games Rashford did receive under Amorim were effectively an audition to save his career.

Rashford didn’t have an obvious fit under Amorim positionally but he did score three goals in those games and looked better than he did under Ten Hag, admittedly, not a high bar to clear.

The fact he didn’t play well overall seems to have trumped his raw stats which is the right way to go about it but the whole timeline changes if they had already made their mind up.

Amorim turns from the one who osctracised him to being the one who gave him every last chance to prove himself when the club had already given up.

More importantly, Rashford turns from a player who should have had a point to prove to someone who gave up as soon as the reality of the club’s stance emerged, which is not a good look.

Turns out, Amorim is not the driver of this particular change, he just happens to be the vessel for it.
