That move didn’t quite work out as United sacked Ten Hag in October having failed to start the season in a positive fashion.
United quickly appointed Ruben Amorim to replace Ten Hag with the Dutchman now seeking his next chance in management.
Premier League jobs have come available but Leicester City, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Southampton, West Ham United and Everton have shown little interest.
Ten Hag’s next job may not be back in the Premier League anyway with one European club suggested.
Erik ten Hag spotted watching Bundesliga giants
Ten Hag is no doubt watching plenty of football whilst out of work as he prepares for his next managerial opportunity.
Sky Germany’s Patrick Berger now claims that Ten Hag was in attendance as Borussia Dortmund lost to Bayer Leverkusen on Friday night.
Berger notes that Ten Hag has been to Signal Iduna Park ‘a few times’ to keep an eye on Dortmund.
Ten Hag is understood to have a ‘good relationship’ with Dortmund advisor Matthias Sammer whilst he was even spotted speaking to Dortmund CEO Carsten Cramer and scout Sven Mislintat.
This certainly sounds like Ten Hag has great connections with the Bundesliga club and boss Nuri Sahin finds himself under pressure.
Berger is adamant that Ten Hag’s visits are not with a view to replacing Sahin despite Dortmund sitting eighth in the Bundesliga table.
Yet you have to believe that, should Sahin lose his job, Ten Hag will be high up on the list of potential replacements.
Erik ten Hag and Marcus Rashford could reunite
Ten Hag’s clear connections to Dortmund are interesting but the Bundesliga club may actually try to sign a United ace to back Sahin.
Reports last week suggested that Dortmund are interested in signing Marcus Rashford on loan from United.
Dortmund took Jadon Sancho on loan from United last year and helped him recapture his best form before joining Chelsea.
Dortmund may look to repeat the trick and take Rashford to the Bundesliga with Donyell Malen looking likely to move on.
Rashford and Ten Hag didn’t have the absolute best relationship according to BBC Sport but may yet be put back together again in Germany.
That would be a fascination situation to see play out and whilst Ten Hag waits for a chance, few would be surprised to see him replace Sahin at Dortmund in 2025.
