Like every other returning international player, apart from Cristiano Ronaldo, Garner reported back for pre-season training yesterday.

After playing a starring role in Nottingham Forest securing promotion to the Premier League for the first time in 23 years, the 21-year-old featured in three of England Under-21s’ four qualifying matches last month.

Following the departures of Nemanja Matic, Jesse Lingard, Paul Pogba and Juan Mata – United’s midfield options have significantly reduced.

Garner returns to United with his stock never being higher and after making 90 first-team appearances across the last two seasons, following his loan spells with Forest and Watford, United’s number 37 is ready to build on the seven first-team appearances he’s made for the Red Devils.

With Garner likely to form part of United’s travelling part that departs for Bangkok on Friday, ahead of Tour 22, the ball-playing midfielder has been pictured having a chat with his new boss.

Although United’s midfield options could be bolstered by the signings of Christian Eriksen and Frenkie de Jong this summer – Garner will believe he can force himself into Ten Hag’s thinking.

In his second day of training under the 52-year-old, the two-time Eredivisie winner had a quick chat with the academy graduate.

Its not the first time that the Dutchman has mad a beeline for a United player in training – Ten Hag did the same with Sweden national captain Victor Lindelof.

Ten Hag speaking to the youngster will make Garner, who scored four goals and provided ten assists last season, feel valued and wanted upon his return to United.

With United embarking on a new era with the Dutchman at the helm, an impressive pre-season campaign could stand Garner in good stead ahead of the Premier League opener against Brighton & Hove Albion on 7 August.
