Erik ten Hag has yet to return to management since leaving Manchester United, but a move to Italy is gathering some steam.

Manchester United’s 2024-25 season is coming to an end with Ruben Amorim seeking success in the Europa League.

United take on Lyon in a two-legged quarter-final tie, with Amorim surely hoping to reach the final – and possibly secure Champions League action for next season.

Amorim is still attempting to take United forward in his image, having replaced Erik ten Hag back in November.

United sacked Ten Hag in October, bringing an end to his time at Old Trafford after a disappointing start to the season.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe regrets keeping Ten Hag last summer, believing that he made a mistake by allowing him to stay after winning the FA Cup.

Erik ten Hag backed for ‘chaotic’ return to management

Ten Hag been out of work for more than five months now, failing to make a return to the game at this stage.

There have been rumours surrounding Ten Hag’s next move, though, with the Dutchman attracting some interest.

Feyenoord considered a controversial move for Ten Hag, but appointed Robin van Persie rather than the former Ajax boss.

Borussia Dortmund also explored appointing Ten Hag, only to consider him to be too expensive.

Ten Hag set tongues wagging over the weekend as he was seen watching Roma’s home clash with Juventus.

Claudio Ranieri intends to depart Roma this summer and clear the way for a new manager to come in.

Ten Hag’s availability means some are wondering whether a move to the Italian capital is now in motion.

Marco van Basten has offered his view, suggesting that Roma are ‘chaotic’ compared to clubs in the north of Italy.

Van Basten believes that Ten Hag is still a good coach, pointing to United’s continued struggles under Amorim whilst believing that he can do a ‘good job’ at Roma.

“I think he could do a good job at Roma,” said Van Basten, as quoted by Voetbal Primeur in the Netherlands.

“You see how difficult that was at Manchester United, but you see now that they are still in a tangle. I still think he is a good coach.

“It is a complicated club. Juventus, AC Milan and Internazionale are in principle bigger clubs, but Roma is also big. It is normally the north where clubs are managed more consciously. Roma is a bit more chaotic,” he added.

Erik ten Hag even visited Roma training ground

Watching a game – especially featuring two huge clubs in Roma and Juventus – isn’t out of the ordinary, especially in one of the finest cities in Europe.

Stopping by at the Stadio Olimpico to catch Sunday’s game doesn’t necessarily mean that Ten Hag is in line for the job, even with Ranieri moving on.

However, RomaPress note that Ten Hag actually visited Roma’s Trigoria training ground on Monday.

Ten Hag reunited with his former Ajax defender Devyne Rensch, but that training ground visit will have raised a few eyebrows.

Gazzetta dello Sport remain adamant that Ten Hag’s presence was just as a guest of the Friedkin ownership, even if their search for a permanent manager his summer continues.
