Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has confirmed the club’s imminent move for goalkeeper Jack Butland.
The Athletic reported earlier today that Butland was set to undergo a medical, ahead of a loan move from Crystal Palace.
Ten Hag was quizzed about Butland’s addition at his press conference, and explained he was very keen to replace Martin Dubravka.

Ten Hag explains Butland move
Ten Hag explained he cannot risk Manchester United’s season falling apart in case of an unexpected injury to David de Gea.
The Dutchman said: “Martin [Dubravka] was recalled and we need three experienced goalkeepers. I’m really happy with David [De Gea]. It’s quite clear he’s our No.1 but there’s always something that can happen with David and you have to be prepared for that.
“We have some young ones, and they do well, but we have so many games.
“Last year I had a situation with Ajax we had three goalies injured, and you don’t want to be in a position when you play for trophies, and you have to put in a young keeper and kill your season. That’s what you have to be prepared for.”
Ten Hag insisted on an extra goalkeeper at the start of the season, hence Dubravka’s arrival, but this loan deal was cancelled at the start of January.
United have Tom Heaton as a back-up too, and he and Jack Butland will compete to deputise David de Gea.
Butland will become Manchester United’s first January signing. The former England international played alongside United technical director Darren Fletcher at Stoke City.
United are in the Premier League top four, and remain in three cup competitions, and will need a big squad to compete in all to the very end. Ten Hag wants to leave nothing to chance.
