The King has spoken. Eric Cantona has presented his view on why the Super League proposals are causing so much anger.

Manchester United announced plans to join a breakaway league on Sunday night, with a statement on the club website, along with five other English teams.

Red Devils legend and cult hero Eric Cantona posted a short video on Instagram to his 896,000 followers.

The Frenchman says the Super League is destined to fail because the clubs involved have failed to engage with fans, and do not realise they are presenting a stale and boring product.

Cantona said: “I would like to say something about the European Super League. Since one year, we have been able to watch games with the best clubs in the world and best players in the world, and it is so boring. Because the fans are not there, the fans singing, jumping, supporting their teams.

“The fans are the most important thing in football. Did the big clubs ask fans what they thought about this idea. No, unfortunately, and thats a shame.”

Big names speak out

Opposition to the Super League proposals are gaining traction, among fans and in the media.

Former United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger spoke out to say the plans will ‘destroy football’.

Following Gary Neville’s tirade at the Glazers on Monday Night Football, Match of the Day host Gary Lineker backed calls for fans and figureheads to unite and try and force the clubs into a U-turn.

The plans are so disastrous that there does not appear to be anybody coming out in support of them.

Manchester United and Liverpool supporters are on the same page, for once, both angered by the treatment and disregard for the clubs by the owners.

At this point surely the men behind the plans will realise they are backing a losing project. The problem is, they are likely to stubborn or blinded by money, to admit it.
