Edwin van der Sar has made his position clear about whether or not he would consider a return to Manchester United for a behind-the-scene role at Old Trafford.

The 53-year-old Dutchman enjoyed an incredible spell at Old Trafford as a Manchester United player after Sir Alex Ferguson signed him from Fulham in 2005.

During his time under the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson, Edwin van der Sar made 266 appearances for the Red Devils and hoovered up the major silverware.

The United legend lifted four Premier League titles, a Champions League and two League Cups during his successful run with the Red Devils.

Former Ajax and United star Van der Sar left Old Trafford in 2011 after he called it time on his legendary playing career.

Van der Sar sends message to Man Utd

Edwin van der Sar played a largely influential role behind the scenes at Ajax after he retired from football.

The former Manchester United No 1 initially returned to the Dutch club as a marketing director in 2012 before he became CEO in 2016.

Van der Sar worked closely alongside United manager Erik ten Hag when his fellow Dutchman was head coach of Ajax.

The former Juventus and Fulham player stepped down from his role as Ajax CEO in 2023 and has been out of football since his time at the club.

Despite being linked with United in the past, Van der Sar insisted that there are “enough Dutchmen” at Old Trafford and ruled out a return for now.

“I do not think I want to take the next step,” he told Humberto a Paris, as per Voetbalprimeur.

“I will have to find a new goal. For a long time, I had the goal of bringing Ajax up to the European top. Now I have temporarily lost my goals, but I will find it at some point.

“I think there are enough Dutchmen [at Manchester United] at the moment. Let those men get to work on the field.”

Man Utd legend Van der Sar on future

Van der Sar suffered a health scare in 2023 after he was taken to hospital while on holiday in Croatia.

The United legend, who was later transferred to a Dutch hospital, was treated in intensive care after he suffered a bleed on his brain.

Van der Sar was later released from intensive care and began the first steps to his recovery, but the former Ajax CEO has now opened up about his future in football.

“I don’t know if I want to work 50 or 60 hours again,” he added.

“Will it be individual projects, something with a federation or something in sports? I have no idea yet. But sports are appealing. That’s the best thing there is.”
