Manchester United legend Edwin van der Sar has candidly provided an important update on his health to fans after his brain haemorrhage in 2023.

Edwin van der Sar enjoyed incredible success at Manchester United after Sir Alex Ferguson brought the Dutchman to Old Trafford in 2005 from Fulham.

The 53-year-old provided Ferguson with much-needed stability between the sticks and lifted four Premier Leagues, a Champions League and two League Cups.

Following his playing career at Old Trafford, Van der Sar returned to Ajax to work behind the scenes and was initially a marketing director at the club.

The former United No 1 was later appointed to the role of CEO and worked closely with ex-Ajax manager Erik ten Hag at the Eredivisie side.

However, Van der Sar suffered a health scare last July after he was taken to hospital and placed in intensive care after a bleed on his brain.

The United legend, who stepped down as Ajax CEO in 2023, was on holiday at the time in Croatia and was later moved to a Dutch hospital after his initial treatment.

Van der Sar shares update on his health

Edwin van der Sar in July 2023 confirmed on X, formerly known as Twitter, that he had left the intensive care unit and was taking his first steps to recovery.

“I’m happy to share that I’m no longer in the intensive care unit,” he wrote at the time.

“However, I’m still in hospital. I hope to go home next week and take the next step in my recovery!”

Van der Sar had previously been linked with a return to Manchester United in a key behind-the-scenes role after he was widely praised for his work at Ajax.

Speaking to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, the former Ajax and Juventus star admitted he didn’t suffer too “much damage” from the bleed on his brain.

“My health is doing well,” he said, as per Goal.

“I didn’t get much damage from it, I think.

“But I have never spent a day in the office from 9am to 5pm. But no, I’m fine.”

Van der Sar also revealed that he has been spending time with his wife in the Caribbean islands and the United legend remains upbeat about his health.

The former Netherlands international hilariously admitted that he did not visit Curacao, a Dutch Caribbean island, due to there being “too many Dutch people.”

Following his brain haemorrhage, Van der Sar was spotted in public in Manchester after he attended a match at Old Trafford.

Both Van der Sar and Robin van Persie were in attendance for United’s sensational 3-2 comeback win against Aston Villa on Boxing Day in 2023.
