Edinson Cavani has laughed off talk of a potential switch to Real Madrid.
Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo reported at the weekend that Cavani could be a January target for the Spanish side.
Cavani is not interested. Speaking to ESPN after arriving in Uruguay for the World Cup qualifiers, the Manchester United striker dismissed the rumours.
Cavani said: “The season is just starting I can’t talk. They talk and they will always continue talking, and the press is like that too, they talk and they have to sell.”
Relaxed over Ronaldo arrival
Cavani was also asked about Cristiano Ronaldo’s arrival at Manchester United and what it meant for him.
The striker said he did not see it as a negative, and said he is a team player who will give his all regardless.
Cavani said: “Those are things that happen, a lot of debate is created, but football is football and you don’t have to turn it around too much, it’s not because one or the other is there, the important thing is to be prepared for when it’s your turn, you always want to play, he wants to be there forever, but that is not going to change my way of thinking or acting.”
Cavani quite obviously understands that this is his final season at United and Ronaldo has committed for longer. This makes it logical that United show a greater focus on the Portuguese star.
The two are both great goalscorers with differing styles, and the key to United’s success may be getting them both on the pitch together.
Cavani’s responses to both of these questions are heartening to hear. He is putting United first and wants to stay loyal to the contract he signed.
For the time being he is back on international duty for the next fortnight, having skipped the previous one at United’s request.
The striker was adamant he made the right choice and would not be drawn into debate on the matter.
He said: “I am not here in front of the cameras to tell the fans the reasons why I did not come, I show on the field what I want for my team and my country. and each one who takes it as he takes it, it was not bad for us.”
