Manchester United youngster Dylan Levitt has withdrawn from the Wales international squad with injury.
Levitt missed Dundee United’s defeat to Hearts through injury at the weekend.
The timing is unfortunate for Levitt, who was hoping to add to his 10 international caps.
Loan deal has been progressing well
Last season Levitt was loaned to Charlton Athletic and failed to hold down a place in the side. He spent the second half of the season on loan in Croatia.
A move to Scottish Premiership side Dundee United was a tricky task for Levitt, and he has made a strong start.
Levitt has made 10 appearances for the Tangerines so far, double the number he managed at Charlton last season.
Importantly the youngster has a manager who believes in him.
Boss Tam Courts told The Courier last week that he regards Levitt as a special talent who his side need to build around.
Court said: “For such a young guy, Dylan Levitt is a remarkable talent. He’s someone who, in a different environment, may find himself struggling to be understood.
“If you commit to playing the game through Dylan then you see his retention, passing quality and ability to run a game.
“There’s no doubt in my mind there is more to come from him. It’s going to be interesting to see him develop.”
United got a glimpse of this two years ago when Levitt made his first team debut against Astana in the Europa League. He made 104 passes and 67 of them were forward passes.
The sad part is Levitt has not made a single competitive first team appearance for United since. That was two years ago.
Levitt did impress in pre-season for United and that gave him a bit of confidence heading into this loan spell.
United must follow his progress closely
Levitt, 20, has a contract which runs to 2022 with the club having an option to extend that to 2023.
Considering United’s lack of midfield quality in the first team, Levitt is a player with potential to become the answer.
He still might need another loan move, with the step from the Scottish Premiership to the Premier League a sizeable one.
There is still time for Levitt. As his manager says, he is a unique and gifted player, and patience could pay off.
If he finishes this season strongly then it will give him the confidence to take a next step. The club won’t want to give up on him just yet.
