Dylan Levitt said he had to push to leave Manchester United for the sake of his career

Dylan Levitt quit Manchester United earlier this month to re-sign with Dundee United, where he spent last season on loan.

Levitt is glad to have found a new home after spending three spells out on loan in England, Scotland and Croatia.

He could have attempted to stay and fight for his place at Old Trafford, but felt it was best to have a clean break, and returns to the club where he won the fans’ player of the year award last season.

Levitt told The Courier he did have a very brief exchange with new manager Erik ten Hag, but his decision to leave had already been made.

Levitt said he had to push to leave

Manchester United extended Levitt’s contract which was due to expire in June, by a year, ahead of his sale, allowing the club to generate a small fee through his sale.

United also negotiated a 25 per cent sell-on clause for Levitt as part of the sale.

Levitt explained to The Courier: “I did expect Man United to extend my contract but then I just had to push to get out.

“I wanted to be settled and sign permanently somewhere. Sometimes you’ve just got to move on and build a career, even if that means getting out.

“Can I get back to the elite level? I’m hoping so. Coming here, it’s a massive step in my career and an opportunity to showcase what I can do. It’s down to me.”

“I spoke to Erik ten Hag when I was doing my medical tests down there. I spoke to him very briefly. It was a hello and goodbye!”

Levitt is focused on being in top condition for the World Cup with Wales later this year, and regular football gives him the best chance of forcing his way into their starting XI for the tournament.

Levitt will also play Europa League football with Dundee United next season, and at 21, he is in the right place for his career to progress.

United are not short of young talented midfield options, with Charlie Savage and Zidane Iqbal both playing starring roles in the club’s opening pre-season friendly.
