Manchester United entered the pre-season game against Liverpool looking for a few positives, regardless of result.

What we got was a staggering 4-0 win, overloaded with reasons to be optimistic. One of these was the performance of teenager Zidane Iqbal.

Iqbal was a half-time substitute, coming on as one of 10 changes, with United 3-0 after a stunning first half.

The 19-year-old more than justified his selection, with a composed 45 minutes in midfield as the Red Devils went on to add to the scoreline, winning 4-0.

Zidane Iqbal stars

Iqbal, a senior international already with Iraq, was excellent in midfield, going up against a strong Liverpool side which included Thiago Alcantara and Fabinho.

He was not at all overawed, playing with remarkable calmness, always making the right decision, whether to pass the ball, shield it, or dribble into space.

Iqbal’s movement meant he was always available to receive a pass, helping the team evade Liverpool’s press, and move upfield.

He displayed a good range of passing, picking out Anthony Elanga with one lofted ball over the top, where the Swede was just offside.

The Athletic reported how Iqbal had received praise in training from Erik ten Hag’s coaching staff, and he showed he could carry on his training performances into a match.

While just a pre-season game, the high calibre of opposition should not be discounted, with Iqbal impressive alongside young teammate Charlie Savage.

Iqbal certainly warrants a closer look as pre-season progresses, and Erik ten Hag will certainly appreciate the technical ability he has. It was on full display in the win in Bangkok.

United might just have discovered a star. Young players need chances, and when they get them, they may never look back. Iqbal now has a platform to build from.
