Dutch expert gives verdict on Tyrell Malacia deal to PSV Eindhoven, ‘in the end this is…’

Manchester United defender Tyrell Malacia has a fresh start away from the club on loan.

Tyrell Malacia was one of the late departures from Manchester United on deadline day.

Although, if you were waiting for a swift confirmation of the deal, you were left wondering, with the move dragging out, amid an extension to the Dutch deadline, and only confirmed late on February 4.

Malacia’s deal is now all agreed, with Fabrizio Romano reporting the defender could depart for a buy option of around £8 million, which includes a sell-on clause.

Tyrell Malacia gets a fresh start

Tyrell Malacia had been out of action entirely between April 2023 and December 2024, due to a complicated knee problem.

Malacia has been used sparingly since his return to action, with United being cautious with his minutes.

United have subsequently signed Patrick Dorgu from Lecce, a player viewed as a better fit for Ruben Amorim’s left wing-back role.

Malacia is back in the Netherlands with PSV Eindhoven, who are currently top of the league, yet saw an opportunity to add the former Feyenoord left-back.

Verdict on Malacia deal

Dutch expert Kees Kwakman spoke to ESPN about the view of PSV’s deal for Tyrell Malacia, and he provided a positive view.

Kwakman explained: “Nice transfer. Malacia has fallen out of the picture because of his injury. You know how it goes at such big clubs, despite the fact that his competitor Luke Shaw is always injured.

“Then others come. In the end this is the best for him. Just play well. Back to the Netherlands. And for PSV, a really good choice if he can get back to his level.”

Malacia was part of the Dutch squad that went to World Cup 2022, so Malacia has shown what he is capable of. When he played for Manchester United, he almost always gave a good account of himself.

While he admitted there are questions over whether Malacia can start two games a week, Kwakman is pleased the defender has an opportunity to find answers.

He added: “An injury like that, a whole year out. He still got minutes now and then. A lot in the Europa League. But now he just has to go and play football for half a year and see what the summer brings.”
