Charlie McNeill makes dream impact on debut for new club after Man Utd exit

Manchester United have allowed a number of players to leave the club this summer and Charlie McNeill has made quite the impact with his new club.

Erik ten Hag has been kept on as Manchester United boss but a number of players reached the end of the line at Old Trafford.

Anthony Martial and Raphael Varane were the most high-profile exits as their contracts ended in June.

Brandon Williams was let go too whilst Marcus Lawrence and Kie Plumley weren’t handed new deals to stay at United.

Shola Shoretire has now joined PAOK after deciding to quit United for a new opportunity in Greece.

Then there is Charlie McNeill, whose time at Old Trafford came to a rather low-key end.

Charlie McNeill enjoys dream debut after Manchester United exit

United snatched forward McNeill away from Manchester City in 2020 and paid a seven-figure fee to snap him up.

McNeill dazzled for the Under-18’s and became the first academy player to be given a first-team debut under Ten Hag at United.

McNeill just couldn’t break through on a regular basis though and United allowed him to leave this summer, although he was the first academy player handed a debut under Erik ten Hag.

The 20-year-old secured a move to Sheffield Wednesday in July and has now enjoyed a dream competitive debut.

McNeill started in Wednesday’s Carabao Cup clash against Hull City and made his impact felt.

McNeill rattled home a first-minute goal to put Wednesday ahead before adding a second inside 10 minutes.

The former United striker picked the pocket of goalkeeper Anthony Racioppi to tap into an empty net.

McNeill couldn’t complete a dream hat-trick but he helped Wednesday secure a 2-1 victory and a spot in the second round.

McNeill’s Carabao Cup draw

Manchester United are not in the second round of the Carabao Cup and will only enter in the third round due to being in European competition.

Wednesday have been drawn against League Two side Grimsby Town in the second round though, presenting McNeill and co with a chance for another great result.

A win in the second round could even set up a third round clash with United, something McNeill would no doubt relish.

This was a dream night for McNeill but he won’t want to just be a Carabao Cup specialist.

McNeill will want Championship minutes too and having been overlooked for the season opener against Wayne Rooney and Plymouth Argyle, the former United talent has sent a real message to boss Danny Rohl.
