Diogo Dalot received a wholesome message from a former Manchester United teammate after his impressive performance against Wigan in the FA Cup on Monday evening.

Marcus Rashford picked out Dalot on the edge of the box and the United full-back curled in a superb strike to fire his side into a first-half lead at the DW Stadium.

Bruno Fernandes then ensured United’s 2-0 victory in the third-round FA Cup tie after he beat Sam Tickle from the spot-kick in the second half.

Dalot, who was replaced by Willy Kambwala late in the second half, was among the standout performers alongside the likes of Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo.

Goals from Fernandes and Dalot have progressed United to the fourth round of the FA Cup, with the Red Devils set to face either Eastleigh or Newport County.

Dalot receives message from ex-United teammate

Dalot took to social media after United’s FA Cup win and posted a picture of his celebration from the match, with the Red Devils star adding a message for the fans.

“First step. Next round,” he wrote to his 3m Instagram followers.

Former United defender Sergio Reguilon wasted no time in reacting to Dalot’s post and left the Portugal international a comment on Instagram.

Reguilon had arrived at Old Trafford on deadline day last summer as part of a season-long loan deal from Tottenham.

The 27-year-old Spaniard provided cover at left-back while Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia were absent through injury, with Dalot sometimes starting ahead of him.

However, Reguilon’s deal to United included a break clause that allowed the Red Devils to end his loan spell early, which the club triggered this month.

Despite his early exit from United, the Spurs full-back was impressed with Dalot’s performance and shared his thoughts in the message that he sent him.

“You play [too] much mannnn [sic],” he wrote.

Dalot on United’s missed chances

United could have won by some margin had they capitalised on their first-half chances, with Scott McTominay among those who failed to take advantage of them.

Rasmus Hojlund could also have bagged a potential hat-trick and failed to score once during the entire contest, leaving Roy Keane frustrated with his performance.

Speaking after the win over Wigan, Dalot admitted that United should have been more clinical in the final third and missed out on a bigger scoreline on the night.

“We created a lot of chances, but the difference in the score today was putting the ball in the net a little more with the chances we had,” he told ITV.

“I think we controlled the game, had some good moments and I’m glad that we won.

“I think it [the early goal] gave comfort to the team, we were looking for the goal, so we could be a little bit more calm, not rushing to score.

“I think we created a lot and could have scored even more goals. Overall, that’s what we missed today.”
