Diogo Dalot’s rise to becoming a Portugal senior international was bittersweet.
The Manchester United defender started his first ever Portugal game against Belgium in the knockout rounds.
Sadly the game ended with a 1-0 defeat and Dalot and Bruno Fernandes were eliminated.
Dalot has written a message reflecting on the side’s exit. He was obviously disappointed but feels the tournament has been a positive one for him individually.
Dalot wrote: “I lived unforgettable moments and a thank you doesn’t reach everyone for the tireless support and affection that they conveyed to us throughout this Euros.
“It wasn’t the ending that we were aiming for so much, but we left convinced that we’ll come back stronger! And once again all together.”
Can he win a recall?
Dalot’s next task is to try and win a recall at international level.
He was promoted after Joao Cancelo was ruled out, and one of the reasons he was called up was that he had just been at the under-21 tournament.
Manager Fernando Santos told A Bola: “Others who were closer to being called, and who also have quality, have been out of the competition for a month and a half. It would be difficult to get here with the necessary pace.”
In Dalot’s favour is the fact he managed to win the right-back spot from Nelson Semedo for the knockout tie. Whether he did enough to impress is open for debate.
But often the hardest part is winning the first call up itself, and Dalot has achieved that and can be proud, especially to play at a major tournament.
Now he needs to make sure his status next season enables him a fair chance at a recall. Being second choice to Aaron Wan-Bissaka at United may not be enough.
