Gareth Southgate is one of the many names linked with Manchester United if Ineos send Ruben Amorim his marching orders.
It has been a challenging start to the season for Manchester United, winning just two of their opening six Premier League matches. The only way to turn things around is by winning matches as the pressure increases on the Portuguese coach.
The latest blow came last week when United lost 3-1 against Brentford. It was a result that prevented the Red Devils from gaining momentum, despite beating Chelsea at Old Trafford in the previous week.
Amorim must make United consistent again, or he risks losing his job. This has prematurely led to reports of potential successors to Amorim, including Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner and Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola.
United fans have seen this before with previous managers. It’s difficult to stop the rot after it starts, but key players like Harry Maguire are rallying behind Amorim, which means he still has support in the dressing room.
Hopefully, after United take on Sunderland, there will be less speculation about who is likely to replace Amorim because all of this seems like an unhealthy distraction.

David Ornstein provides Gareth Southgate update amid Man Utd links
Former England manager Gareth Southgate has been linked with the United job again.
Due to his strong links with Ineos, Southgate will inevitably get linked to the United job, but there does not appear to be any truth in the stories.
Respected journalist David Ornstein has provided an update on NBC Sports, saying United want to stick with Amorim.
Ornstein also acknowledges that Amorim is not on the verge of walking away from the job, but both parties are in agreement that results must improve. He also states that if a change is made, Southgate is not expected to be among the list of potential candidates.
“I am assured that Gareth Southgate is not in line for the Man Utd job should it become available.”
Other managers are getting tipped for the job, though.
Ben Foster believes Glasner is the man for the job, while Iraola claims he is happy at Bournemouth.
How Gareth Southgate did at Middlesbrough
Southgate did an incredible job as England manager, but he doesn’t have a lot of experience managing at club level.
The only domestic job held by Southgate was his tenure as manager of Middlesbrough, which lasted from 2006 to 2009, following the departure of Steve McClaren, who had taken the England job at the time.
In his first season at Middlesbrough, they finished 12th in the Premier League.
Southgate’s tenure ended when the club was relegated to the Championship in the 2008/09 season, and he was sacked in October 2009.
He went on to impress the FA by coaching the U21s before getting the senior England job.
