David Beckham has praised one key first-team Manchester United player under Red Devils boss Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford amid a disappointing 2024-25 campaign.

Ruben Amorim is in the tail end of Manchester United’s lacklustre season and the Red Devils have only two matches remaining in their current campaign.

The Red Devils will return to action on Wednesday evening for their biggest match of the season, with United reaching the Europa League final to face Tottenham.

United’s season has a lot riding on their success in the 2025 Europa League final, including whether or not the club will have Champions League football next season.

The Red Devils’ Premier League form has been awful in the 2024-25 season and Amorim’s men have lost four of their last five Premier League matches.

Amorim’s side tasted their 18th Premier League defeat of the season last Friday evening after Chelsea inflicted a 1-0 defeat on United at Stamford Bridge.

United are only one point above fellow Europa League finalists Tottenham, who are 17th in the Premier League, and the Red Devils languish in 16th place in the table.

David Beckham drops his clear-cut assessment on Man Utd star Bruno Fernandes under Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford

Manchester United will end the season outside the top half of the table and with their worst Premier League finish since the league’s inception back in 1992.

The Red Devils will host Aston Villa for their final Premier League match of the season at Old Trafford on Sunday evening after their Europa League final match.

Bruno Fernandes has still impressed for United in the campaign and the 30-year-old Red Devils skipper has been a redeeming factor for Ruben Amorim this season.

The United captain has shown his worth by netting 19 times and registering 19 assists in 55 matches for the Red Devils across all competitions this season.

Bruno Fernandes is under contract with United until 2027, but the Red Devils midfielder has attracted transfer interest from Saudi Arabia in recent weeks.

David Beckham has praised the “exceptional” Portugal and Red Devils player and he is hopeful that United will not sell Fernandes in the summer transfer window.

“I think Ruben definitely needs to be backed in bringing in the players he wants but I actually don’t know how possible it is,” he told The Athletic.

“I don’t speak to Jim [Ratcliffe] that often, only from time to time.

“Ruben needs to be backed as a manager to bring in his team and his philosophy; he’s trying that already but I think once he brings his team in and his players, then you’ll see something different.

“I’d like to think you wouldn’t have to sell your captain [Fernandes]. He has been exceptional.

“We’ve all been critical at times of some United players — but when we needed someone to step up, he has done it.”

Man Utd legend David Beckham would ‘hate’ to see one thing happen at Old Trafford

The Red Devils are expected to back Amorim in the summer window and the 40-year-old former Sporting CP manager needs to rebuild his United first-team squad.

Beckham insisted that he does not want to see the club sell United youth academy products as part of the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

“I also hate [the idea of] any young player who has grown up at United leaving the club,” he added.

“We shouldn’t be selling players purely for financial reasons.

“It should be what they are doing on the field and if they’re not performing, there’s always a chance — we all knew that, I knew that.

“If I wasn’t performing on the pitch, it didn’t matter what I’d done in the past or what I was going to do in the future; there was a good chance that I was either going to get left on the bench, or I was going to get sold.

“I’d like to think that Manchester United don’t sell players that have grown up at the club, understand and love the club.

“I don’t want to see players leave Manchester United if they care about United like I do.”

United will face Tottenham in the 2025 Europa League final on Wednesday at the San Mames Stadium in Bilbao, with kick-off scheduled for 8pm UK time.
