Manchester United have confirmed Denis Law has sadly passed away, aged 84.

The club legend spent 11 years at Old Trafford and enjoyed a hugely successful playing career. Law was among United’s greatest-ever strikers.

Born in Aberdeen, Scotland in February 1940, Law transferred to Man United from Torino in 1962 for a then-record British transfer fee of £115,000.

He went on to be part of some of the club’s most memorable moments and will forever be missed as much as he is remembered.

Man United announce Denis Law passing

Announcing his passing, Man United shared a statement from the Law family on Friday evening.

“It is with a heavy heart that we tell you our father Denis Law has sadly passed away. He fought a tough battle but finally he is now at peace,” the statement read.

“We would like to thank everyone who contributed to his wellbeing and care, past and much more recently. We know how much people supported and loved him and that love was always appreciated and made the difference. Thank you.”

Brian Kidd, who joined Man United in 1974; the season after Law left to join Man City, added the Scotsman had the ‘heart of a lion’ and was an ‘unbelievable finisher’.

Touching words from a former pro who was very much part of Law’s pioneering generation of players.

A look back at Law’s finest moments

Law made his Man United debut on August the 18th, 1962 against West Brom. He scored during their 2-2 draw after just the first seven minutes.

His first season with the Red Devils saw him lift the FA Cup. He opened the final’s scoring against Leicester City in a game which ended 3-1.

The 1963-64 season saw Law enjoy a record-breaking campaign. He scored 46 goals across all competitions — this record still stands today.

In line with his superb season, Law was named the best European Footballer of the Year (Ballon d’Or). He is the only Scottish player to win the prestigious award.

Following his individual crown, Law went on to fire Man United to two First Division titles in 1964-65 and 1966-67.

In Europe, Law unfortunately missed the 1968 European Cup final against Benfica due to injury but was a key player throughout the competition and was a key part of Sir Matt Busby’s team — widely regarded as one of the best teams ever.
