Chris Sutton convinced on clear Newcastle vs Man Utd prediction as key man ‘needs to put some credit into the bank’

BBC Sport pundit Chris Sutton has revealed his telling scoreline prediction for Manchester United’s forthcoming Premier League clash against Newcastle.

The Red Devils’ last Premier League outing came last Sunday, with Manchester United and Manchester City walking away with a point each at Old Trafford.

Following the uneventful 0-0 encounter between United and City in the derby, the Red Devils resumed their 2024-25 Europa League campaign on Thursday evening.

Ruben Amorim’s men travelled to France and United and Lyon played out a 2-2 draw in their first-leg Europa League quarter-final clash at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais.

United came from behind to lead Lyon 2-1 late in the second half before a second costly mistake from Andre Onana allowed the French side to find a crucial equaliser.

The Red Devils are 13th in the Premier League table and have only seven league matches remaining ahead of their visit to St James’ Park to face Newcastle.

United have won only 10 Premier League matches in 31 fixtures in their lacklustre 2024-25 campaign and face an uphill battle to finish in the top half of the table.

Chris Sutton sends a clear message about Ruben Amorim ahead of Man Utd’s Premier League clash vs Newcastle at St James’ Park

Manchester United are on course for their worst finish in the table in the Premier League era and could miss out on a place in a European qualification spot.

Ruben Amorim could still lift major silverware as United manager in the 2024-25 campaign if the Red Devils are able to come out on top in the Europa League.

A United triumph in the Europa League would also pave the way for the Red Devils to secure European football and a return to the Champions League next season.

Speaking in his BBC Sport column ahead of the Newcastle match, Chris Sutton said that United’s final standing in the Premier League table is still important for Amorim.

“It does feel like Ruben Amorim is steadying the ship at Manchester United but there is nothing much for them to get excited about in the Premier League and it could be a pretty dull end to their domestic campaign, especially because they are finding it difficult to score goals,” he explained.

“Like Tottenham, United’s season is hanging on the Europa League now, but their Premier League results still matter for Amorim because he needs to put some credit into the bank going into next season.”

Sutton insisted that fifth-place Newcastle still have a lot to play for in their season due to Eddie Howe’s men being in the race for a Champions League spot.

“I just can’t see past a Newcastle win here, though,” he continued.

“They are one of the teams in this race for the Champions League places and are in great form. Now we know the top five are guaranteed to get in, I am confident they will make it.

“It just shows the value of winning the Carabao Cup because it seems like it has given them a big leg up.

“They will have enjoyed themselves celebrating for a few days but now they are focused on making it into the Champions League, which is so important because of the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.

“If they make it, it gives them the opportunity to build.”

Sutton has backed Eddie Howe’s Newcastle side to come out on top at St James’ Park and for the Magpies to beat United 2-0 in the Premier League clash on Sunday.
