Chelsea consider swoop for Alvaro Carreras, and it could benefit Man Utd

Former Manchester United left-back Alvaro Carreras completed a mega-money switch to Real Madrid last summer, but 12 months on, Chelsea could be set to offer the Spaniard a route back to the Premier League.

Erik ten Hag was heavily criticised for overlooking Alvaro Carreras at Manchester United, before the young left-back proved himself at Benfica and earned a £42 million transfer to Real Madrid.

There is no denying that it was a frustrating season for Real Madrid. At least for Carreras, the former United academy star made 40 appearances in his debut season.

That hasn’t stopped Jose Mourinho from pushing to sign Chelsea left-back Marc Cucurella, which could trigger a merry-go-round of transfers for left-backs this summer.

Chelsea target Real Madrid’s Alvaro Carreras

Following Real Madrid’s agreement to sign Cucurella, leaks emerged that Mourinho received ‘negative reports’ on Carreras.

This immediately spread doubt over Carreras’ future in the Spanish capital.

According to AS in Spain, Carreras has been included on Chelsea’s shortlist of left-backs to replace Cucurella this summer.

The report states that Chelsea are merely testing the waters in terms of the potential transfer fee and whether the player is available.

It is also noted that Xabi Alonso, who has been hired as Chelsea manager, knows Carreras very well, having signed him last year.

Carreras has yet to learn whether he will be part of Mourinho’s plans for the upcoming season.

Chelsea’s move for Alvaro Carreras could give Man Utd clear run for Lewis Hall

When news emerged that Cucurella had an agreement with Real Madrid, there were immediate fears that it could complicate United’s quest to sign Lewis Hall from Newcastle.

Chelsea being in the market for a new left-back was bound to lead to speculation, but these Carreras reports suggest they have their eyes on other players.

That potentially gives United a clear run to sign Hall, should the Red Devils formalise their interest in the 21-year-old.
