Manchester United clinched the signing of striker Wout Weghorst, adding to the team’s depth up front.

Weghorst is an experienced Dutch international, who starred at the World Cup for the Netherlands, and has joined on loan until the end of the season.

The forward is on loan from Burnley, with a previous loan deal at Besiktas cancelled.

Players who switch clubs in January often run the risk of being cup-tied. So does this apply to Wout Weghorst?

Can Wout Weghorst play in the Europa League?

Yes, Wout Weghorst is eligible to play in the Europa League for Manchester United.

Besiktas’ sixth place finish in the Turkish Super Lig in 2021/22 was not enough to earn entry to the competition, or even the UEFA Conference League.

As a result, Weghorst is not cup-tied and is free to play for Manchester United in the Europa League.

The Europa League’s Twitter account has even expressed excitement at Weghorst’s involvement in the competition, posting a video of his previous goals in the competition with Wolfsburg.

Manchester United face Barcelona in the Europa League knockout rounds, and Weghorst will go up against his old Bundesliga rival Robert Lewandowski.

He will also face his Dutch international colleague Frenkie de Jong, who has congratulated the striker on his move to Manchester United.
