Manchester United’s terrible defensive record this season is not necessarily reflective on David De Gea.

The Spaniard has been one of United’s best players this season, rolling back the clock to the Louis van Gaal era when he consistently bailed the team out.

The defence was so bad over the last two league games that not even De Gea could do anything about it.

The goalkeeper was badly let down as United shipped 11 goals in two games.

Against Tottenham, United were far more resolute.

The team kept just a second clean sheet of the season in a 3-0 victory away from home.

Teammate Bruno Fernandes paid tribute to De Gea after the game, acknowledging that the team had finally stepped up for their goalkeeper.

Fernandes’ message read ‘You deserve this’, praising the shot stopper.

Fernandes’ sentiments are spot on. De Gea was badly let down against Liverpool.

The message underlines the team spirit in United’s dressing room, and shows that the players recognise the performances De Gea has delivered.

Now what we want to see is a real run of clean sheets across the upcoming games. Not every opponent will be as weak in attack as Tottenham, however.
