Bruno Fernandes turned his attention away from Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney and put his full spotlight on former England midfielder Michael Carrick.

The 31-year-old Manchester United captain has thrived under Michael Carrick since the 44-year-old Red Devils legend was appointed interim head coach in January.

Bruno Fernandes has netted three times and registered eight assists in 10 Premier League matches during Carrick’s reign in the post-Ruben Amorim era of the club.

The United star has found the back of the net eight times overall and picked up 17 assists in 30 matches across all competitions in the 2025-26 season at Old Trafford.

Why Bruno Fernandes would want to play with Michael Carrick over Man Utd legend Wayne Rooney

Speaking to the Men in Blazers, Bruno Fernandes was asked if there was one Manchester United player he wished he could play alongside at Old Trafford right now.

The Portugal international snubbed Wayne Rooney after he admitted that Man Utd’s all-time record scorer would bench him due to the similar positions that they played.

“You have many: I won’t say Rooney because he plays kind of in the same position as me,” Fernandes said.

“So, I would be on the bench and that’s not fun.”

With England icon Rooney ruled out, Fernandes felt that United legend Michael Carrick would be the perfect Red Devils star he would want to be alongside on the pitch.

“I’ve said it many times, but now he’s going to sound, it’s going to sound strange, but I said it many times, Michael Carrick,” he added.

“Because I’ve trained with him when he was here under Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer] and sometimes he was training with us, you know, as a [number] six, putting the balls between the lines and he was great.”

What Bruno Fernandes really admired about former Man Utd and England midfielder Michael Carrick

Carrick had a prolific playing career at Old Trafford and hoovered up major silverware at Man Utd, including lifting five Premier League titles at the club.

Fernandes admitted that the talented ex-United midfielder would have accompanied him superbly from the middle of the park in his current role as a No 10.

“As a [No] 10, you want that ball to come to you as fast as possible,” he explained.

“He was incredible in timing the passes, you know, control and pass. Sometimes it’s not about having the ball for so long, but as quick as you can, make your teammate as free as possible.

“And he was great at doing that. And for me as a 10, having someone behind that knows how to release the ball quickly for me to get the most of the space that I can have, it’s perfect.”

Carrick, who retired in 2018, also captured a Champions League trophy, a Europa League trophy, an FA Cup and three League Cups during his remarkable spell at United.
