Fernandes has quite a good collection of wonder goals during his time at the club so far but even he agrees that one teammate’s effort stands out among everything.
In an interaction with Sky Sports, Fernandes was asked to pick which ability he would want to have from his teammates, and among them, one option was having the bicycle kick ability of Alejandro Garnacho.
Fernandes immediately discarded that choice, saying Garnacho just has one really good goal from it and this being his trademark skill is “not very true”.
He said: “This is not very true. He has done it once really well but in training, he’s been trying too many times and it’s not going to work.
“I did score one like this, not as good as this. This was unbelievable. Even looking at Everton fans, they were like, ‘Wow, what has he just done!’. If you are a football fan or player, it’s a pleasure to witness moments like these.”
It sums up Fernandes’ nature
Fernandes has always been a great leader and the way he gives props to Garnacho for the effort while simultaneously firing a funny jibe at him for what he’s done since scoring perfectly encapsulates his nature.
As a young player, Garnacho has been at the end of such remarks often, mainly from Fernandes, as the captain and the manager have been keen to keep his feet on the ground amid a rapid rise to the top.
Garnacho recently called Fernandes “Magnifico” after his contract extension confirmation, borrowing from the chant fans have for him.
The way the Portuguese carries himself is a learning for younger players coming through as players like Fernandes have the ability to set the culture of the dressing room.
