Bruno Fernandes delivers one-word verdict on Mason Mount after Manchester United win over Plzen

Manchester United picked up a third straight Europa League victory by coming from behind to beat Plzen on Thursday night.

After three draws to start the Europa League campaign, Manchester United beat PAOK and Bodo/Glimt in back-to-back games to get back on track.

Ruben Amorim took his side to take on Czech outfit Plzen on Thursday night, hoping for a response after two Premier League defeats.

United were flat and uninspired in the first half though and fell behind after the break as Andre Onana’s error gifted a goal to former Premier League forward Matej Vydra.

Substitute Rasmus Hojlund saved the game though, scoring twice to hand United a 2-1 victory.

Hojlund was inspired by Anthony Martial for his late winner with United showing some fight and resolve to turn the game on its head.

Bruno Fernandes on Mason Mount

This wasn’t a particularly enthralling United performance but they got the job done after falling behind.

Midfielder Mason Mount came off the bench around the hour mark and enjoyed a promising cameo.

Mount did squander a golden opportunity to score as he fired straight at Plzen goalkeeper Martin Jedlicka, but he offered a spark in and out of possession.

Mount has taken to Instagram to react to Thursday’s win, offering just four words.

‘Head down – onto Sunday’ said Mount with his attention and focus already turning to Sunday’s clash with Manchester City.

Mount was applauded by Harry Maguire and received a one-word message from United captain Bruno Fernandes.

‘Class’ said Fernandes alongside a clapping emoji, seemingly loving what Mount brought to United’s victory.

Mount knocking on door v Manchester City

Amorim is still tinkering with his United setup, learning about his players whilst managing the workload of his squad as the festive period looms.

Nobody knows just how Amorim will line up against City this weekend but Mount will be right in his thoughts.

United will need committed players out of possession whilst being able to make an impact going forward.

Alejandro Garnacho hasn’t looked entirely comfortable in one of the two number 10 roles but that is a role Mount knows well.

Mount played in a 3-4-3 system at Chelsea under Thomas Tuchel and thrived, making him an appealing option against City.

The idea of Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo in central midfield with Bruno and Mount ahead of them is appealing too, creating a box midfield which can cause problems in and out of possession.

That is something for Amorim to think about, but if Mount can start to add goal contributions alongside his pressing, he will finally begin to repay the money spent on him in 2023.
