Manchester United fans hail Bruno Fernandes' substitute display

Bruno Fernandes played like a tornado in his 10 minutes on the pitch for Manchester United against Club Brugge.

While he didn’t quite crumble Brugge into wreckage, he came so close to overpowering them and forcing a late winner.

Fernandes had 20 touches in 10 minutes as he changed the game and put United in almost total control.

What narrowly let him down was his execution. He saw shots blocked, and his free-kick hit the wall.

If he had been more ruthless, he would have had a second crack at the end but instead let Juan Mata have a go, which produced the same result.

Fernandes also produced one scything cross field pass which split open the Brugge defence and found Juan Mata through on goal. The Spaniard though was inches offside and then missed the chance.

Difference in quality is like night and day

What made Fernandes’ impact stand out was the turgid lack of creativity which came before.

The trio of Juan Mata, Andreas Pereira and Jesse Lingard all struggled to create chances with only the former setting Anthony Martial free at the start of the second half.

Fernandes is head and shoulders above his rivals and former star Robin van Persie described his cameo appearance as ‘unbelievable’.

United really need to clone Fernandes so there is not such a big drop off in quality when he is rotated out of the team. In the absence of that being a possibility, a credible alternative must be bought this summer.

He showed real desire when he came on and this is the type of performance expected from AWOL star Paul Pogba.

Better than Pogba?

United fans were delighted with the performance from Fernandes in such a brief cameo and left with the impression we would have won easily had he played the full 90 minutes.

There were also favourable comparisons to Paul Pogba, with Fernandes’ desire certainly putting the Frenchman to shame.

Here is a look at some of the reaction on social media to the former Sporting star’s display…
