Ben Foster praises Ruben Amorim in one area despite Manchester United display v Everton, shares ‘naive’ concern

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim still needs to convince fans and pundits alike after a shaky start to life at Old Trafford.

Manchester United return to Premier League action once again on Wednesday night, hosting Ipswich Town at Old Trafford.

Ruben Amorim is once again seeking an improvement after United drew 2-2 with Everton on Saturday afternoon.

This game sees Amorim take on Kieran McKenna once again having faced Ipswich in his first United game back in November.

United claimed a 1-1 draw at Ipswich on that day but will be looking for better this time around.

The United boss has yet to bring quality performances on a consistent basis and he is now looking for just a fifth Premier League win since his move to Manchester.

Ben Foster shares Ruben Amorim praise

Amorim has talked a good game in the most part but the results on the pitch have not yet followed.

Ineos want Europa League qualification from Amorim, so that means either winning the FA Cup or Europa League.

That’s a big ask from a United side who look poor going forward and fragile defensively.

Questions are already being asked about Amorim but former United goalkeeper Ben Foster has moved to offer some praise for the Portuguese coach.

Speaking on his Youtube channel, Foster suggested that Amorim is actually a ‘very good judge of character’.

Foster loves that side of Amorim and believes that he knows exactly who wants to work ‘properly’ at United.

Foster joked that you wouldn’t have known it from the game at Everton, but the way he has handled players such as Marcus Rashford suggests that he has a clear idea in mind.

“Do you know what I like about Amorim, I like the fact that he seems a very good judge of character,” said Foster.

“I think he’s a very good judge of the players that like to do it properly and work hard and put a proper shift in…. I think so anyway, you wouldn’t have thought so by the performance for the first 70 minutes at the weekend, but he’s pretty good at that with the way he’s dealt with a lot of players already,” he added.

Ruben Amorim ‘naive’ in one area

It’s not all good news from Foster’s perspective though.

The former United stopper feels that Amorim is completely ‘naive’ tactically and needs to alter his approach to suit this squad.

Foster firstly suggested that he is ‘undecided’ about Amorim’s tactics, but changed that verdict to say that he doesn’t like his approach at all.

Foster does though understand that Amorim needs to dismantle the United squad and rebuild from there, believing that he needs to get rid of the ‘bad eggs’ in the building.

“I’m very undecided about his tactics… no, in fact, I’ll say that differently; I’m not undecided, I think tactically he’s very naive and he shouldn’t be just doing what he’s doing and sticking to it,” said Foster.

“But I think… what it takes is somebody like an Amorim to be able to get rid of all the bad eggs and all of the dead wood, to clear all of that out, to get the players off the long contracts, get them out, as many as you possibly can, and then start a rebuild,” he added.

Selling players who are struggling isn’t always easy business, as United have found in recent times.

Yet with Antony shining for Real Betis and Rashford catching the eye for Aston Villa, other clubs may believe that they can also get United’s struggling players back on track.
