Arsenal legend claims Man Utd signing’s ‘style is totally different’ from what fans have seen before

Arsenal legend David Seaman has claimed that he is ‘worried’ by some of the things he has seen from Andre Onana after the Manchester United star’s up-and-down season.

Onana succeeded David de Gea as United’s No 1 after arriving at Old Trafford last summer in a £47.2m deal from Serie A side Inter Milan.

The 27-year-old United shot-stopper was a key part of Inter’s successful run to the Champions League final last season, which ended in a 1-0 defeat to Manchester City.

Onana was reunited with ex-Ajax boss Erik ten Hag at United and high expectations were placed on his shoulders after he replaced De Gea between the sticks.

The United star has faced stinging criticism over his performances in the Champions League, with Onana making big mistakes against Galatasary and Bayern Munich.

Despite his blunders in Europe’s top-tier club competition, Ten Hag has kept faith in Onana rather than turning to Tom Heaton or summer signing Altay Bayindir.

Seaman on Onana’s United performances so far

Onana has had a better run of form in the Premier League ahead of the Champions League, with the Cameroon international keeping six clean sheets in 20 matches.

The ex-Ajax star is currently tied with Newcastle’s Nick Pope, Liverpool’s Alisson and Everton’s Jordan Pickford in the race for the Premier League Golden Glove award.

Speaking on his Seaman Says podcast, Seaman remains unconvinced by what he has seen from Onana so far and added that he has been a “real mixed bag.”

“It’s a real mixed bag with Onana. He’s made some good saves, but he’s made some easy saves and tried to make them look good,” he said.

“He’s had some right stinkers as well. There’s too much other stuff there that worries me.”

Seaman added: “He makes saves look good, his style is totally different, the way he makes saves is strange… it’s almost as if he’s not had a lot of coaching from a young age because he makes weird saves.”

Onana still has time at United

Onana will have time away from United after he made a U-turn on his international retirement and was included in Cameroon’s squad for the Africa Cup of Nations.

The Cameroon star is expected to be available for United’s third-round FA Cup clash against Wigan on Monday and Premier League tie with Tottenham on Sunday.

United and Cameroon reached an agreement over Onana that would allow him to represent the Red Devils until mid-January before flying out for AFCON duties.

Onana could end up playing two matches in two days, with United facing Spurs on 14th January and Cameroon playing Guinea on 15th January in their AFCON opener.

The time away from Old Trafford could be a breath of fresh air for the former Inter star and allow Onana to focus on Cameroon’s success on the international stage.
