Manchester United can’t get out of their own way when it comes to making life difficult.

When Andre Onana was called up to Cameroon earlier this season, there was some worry about what it could mean for the African Cup of Nations in early 2024.

As it has turned out, the prospect of the summer signing taking a brief break has not been one fans are wary of, due to some mixed form from the goalkeeper.

In fact, many have been looking forward to seeing Turkey international stopper Altay Bayindir get a chance.

Manchester United delaying Onana exit

According to The Athletic, Manchester United have managed to agree to delay Onana’s exit until after the match with Tottenham.

This means Onana will likely start against Wigan in the FA Cup and the Tottenham game.

These could have been opportunities for Bayindir, who Manchester United spent £4.3 million on to acquire from Fenerbahce.

The decision to delay Onana’s exit feels like a snub towards Bayindir, rather than faith in the Cameroon man. Manchester United have a squad, so let’s use it.

Supporters unhappy with decision

Manchester United fans have reacted with disappointment towards the club’s decision to keep Andre Onana around for these two upcoming games.

One fan on X wrote: “This is so stupid what was the point of signing that second choice keeper last summer if you’re never gonna use him for anything outside training??”

Another warned: “Think Onana was seriously concerned he could lose his place to Bayindir. Not sure it’s the best outcome for us or him, considering he’s going to have his mind on the Cameroon game whilst playing for us vs Spurs.”

A third said: “I really feel bad for Altay. Why did we even sign him?”

Another supporter said, “I really feel for Altay Bayindir right now. His little opportunity of game time is cut even shorter. At least let him be tested. This isn’t fair at all!”

More comments read, “Clearly shows Ten hag doesn’t trust the backup goalkeepers. What’s all this obsession about?” and “Whyyy??? His performances haven’t been any special. Are our other goalkeepers that terrible?”

Another fan wrote: “Gotta admit I’m disappointed. Wrong attitude and clearly afraid of the competition in Bayindir, clearly seen he’s good in training and worried about losing his 1st team spot so minimalising the chances Bayindir will get to play.”
