Antony’s nine-word reaction to winning ‘La Liga Match MVP’ award after stunning Real Betis debut speaks volumes

Manchester United loanee Antony made his feelings clear on social media after his debut impact for La Liga side Real Betis against Athletic Club on Sunday.

Antony arrived at Old Trafford from Ajax in an initial £82m move in 2022 and was reunited with former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag.

The 24-year-old United player had played under Erik ten Hag at Ajax and Antony’s hefty transfer fee placed high expectations on his shoulders.

Antony was met with heavy criticism over his form and lack of consistency for the Red Devils, despite Ten Hag’s defence of the former Ajax star.

Ten Hag’s sacking as United manager last October paved the way for Ruben Amorim’s arrival from Sporting CP last November.

Antony fell down the pecking order under Ruben Amorim and was left fighting for first-team minutes at Old Trafford ahead of his exit.

The Real Betis player featured in 14 appearances for United in the 2024-25 campaign and Antony netted only once for the Red Devils.

Antony’s response to award win

Real Betis manager Manuel Pellegrini started Antony for the La Liga side’s encounter with Athletic Club at the Benito Villamarin on the weekend.

Antony left Manchester United last month and the Brazilian winger completed his loan move to Real Betis for the remainder of the 2024-25 season.

The United loanee was praised for his performance for the Spanish outfit, with Antony playing a key role in Isco’s first-half opener for Betis.

Antony’s Betis debut lasted 72 minutes before Manuel Pellegrini made the decision to pull him off and replaced him with Abde Ezzalzouli.

Following the 2-2 draw against Athletic Club, the Brazil international took to Instagram and shared his delight in scooping the ‘La Liga Match MVP’ award.

Posting on Instagram, Antony wrote (via the Metro): “Let’s go for more! Happy to be elected MVP!!!”

Amorim on Antony’s Man Utd struggles

Antony played under Ruben Amorim before his departure and the Brazilian winger even operated as a wing-back in the United manager’s tactical system.

However, the former Ajax star was unable to impress and Amorim opened up about Antony’s struggles after the 4-3 defeat to Tottenham in the Carabao Cup.

“He needs more confidence,” Amorim said last December.

“If you remember the Antony at Ajax, he lacks a little bit of confidence to go one-v-one, so he will improve.

“But he’s working really hard, he’s trying, he’s playing more inside than outside, especially in this game [against Tottenham].

“You have to do that to work really hard and that will help him to be a better player.”
