For all the media talk whether Manchester United got it right or wrong selling Romelu Lukaku, there are few tears shed among fans that the Belgian was allowed to move on.
The problem has been not adding depth to the striking ranks since he was allowed to leave on deadline day in August.
One player who has been flourishing over the past fortnight is Anthony Martial.
He has now scored three goals in his last three matches to propel his tally to 15 for the season.
This is the same number of goals which Lukaku managed for United last season in all competitions.
Martial will move clear
15 goals in all competitions was a poor return last season from Lukaku considering he had no injuries.
Martial has missed nine games this season due to injury and illness, with United feeling his absence at the start of the campaign.
His 15 goals have come in 2,342 minutes of action. Lukaku’s 15 goals came in 3,001 minutes.
Martial will now move clear of Lukaku’s unimpressive tally, with three months left to try and surpass the 20 goal mark.
United managed to get £74 million for Lukaku despite his poor season, which is pretty good business from a club which has in recent years sold talented players on the cheap, see Rafael, Robin van Persie and Angel di Maria.
Lukaku is doing well in Italy too, and so he won’t be having regrets about leaving United either.
Martial still has plenty of work to do to demonstrate he can produce consistently, but this week has been a big step in the right direction.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer praised him after the game while also saying he wants more from the forward.
Solskjaer told the club website: ““He’s so skilful, is Anthony. I thought he’d ran offside, but the timing from Bruno’s pass was perfect and the skill there is just incredible.
“He does that in training, so you’re not that surprised. I’m delighted with the week Anthony has had. He has his critics – I’m probably the biggest. He scored a great header against Chelsea, did everything to score against Brugge and today was more classic Anthony. But I want more from him.”
Surpassing Lukaku’s 2018/19 tally should really have been a given for Martial, and to do it by February bearing in mind his injuries, shows he is doing well.
Now the Frenchman needs to build on this successful week and make a real impact in the upcoming games against Club Brugge, Everton, Manchester City and Tottenham.
