Former Manchester United talent Angel Gomes dropped a heartfelt message after he made his first England start in the Nations League win over Finland on Tuesday.
Angel Gomes, who came through the Red Devils’ youth academy, has been with Ligue 1 club Lille since 2020 after he left Manchester United.
The 24-year-old England international has seen success in France after breaking into the Lille first team and securing regular playing time.
Gomes’ impressive run with the French club caught the eye of Lee Carsley, who took over as England interim boss after Gareth Southgate stepped down from his role.
Lee Carsley wasted no time in making the decision to call the former United player up to the senior England squad for the September international break.

Gomes’ message and Man Utd legend’s reaction
Angel Gomes made his England debut last weekend in the Three Lions’ Nations League opener against the Republic of Ireland at the Aviva Stadium.
The Three Lions midfielder came off the bench in the second half and replaced Manchester United star Kobbie Mainoo for a cameo appearance on Saturday.
Following the 2-0 win over the Republic of Ireland in Dublin, Lee Carsley turned to Gomes for the Nations League encounter against Finland at Wembley.
Gomes started in the heart of midfield alongside Arsenal star Declan Rice and the Lille star saw out the full 90 minutes in the 2-0 win on Tuesday evening.
England captain Harry Kane ensured the Three Lions sealed all three points in the Nations League clash after a stunning second-half brace against Finland.
Following the match at Wembley, Gomes took to social media to celebrate a “special week” for him and paid tribute to Harry Kane for his 100th England match.

“2/2 wins! Special week for me, representing my country! Congrats @harrykane [Harry Kane] [on] 100 games [sic],” he wrote on Instagram.
United legend Nicky Butt, who was previously a coach at Old Trafford, wasted no time in celebrating Gomes’ success by posting three clapping emojis.
Ian Wright and Roy Keane on Gomes
Speaking on ITV, Arsenal hero Ian Wright and United legend Roy Keane both praised Gomes for his overall display for England against Finland at Wembley.
“Angel Gomes. Jack [Grealish] and Trent [Alexander-Arnold] have been spoken about,” Ian Wright said.
“Seeing Gomes in that midfield, constantly on the move. His touch of the ball.”
He added: “He’s [Gomes] constantly available.”
Reacting to Gomes’ performance, Roy Keane said: “There’s great options. There will probably be a bit of a headache for him.”
