Manchester United fans have already made an early call on Angel Gomes after the Lille star’s first England start against Finland on Tuesday evening at Wembley.
Angel Gomes started his professional playing career in the Manchester United youth academy and the former Red Devils talent made 10 senior appearances for the club.
Despite emerging into the United first team, Gomes struggled to make a name for himself at Old Trafford and was unable to secure regular playing time.
Gomes rejected the option to sign a new deal at United and the former Red Devils player left Old Trafford at the end of his contract in 2020.
The 24-year-old midfielder moved to French club Lille on a free transfer and Gomes was immediately loaned out to Portuguese side Boavista.
Gomes has been able to reinvent himself at Lille and secured regular first-team action, with the former United player making 118 appearances for the Ligue 1 side.

Gomes’ first start for England
Angel Gomes’ impressive spell at Lille earned the former Manchester United youth academy product his senior England call-up during the September break.
Lee Carsley, who was appointed Three Lions interim manager after Gareth Southgate’s departure, handed Gomes his England debut in the Nations League.
Gomes came off the bench in the second half and replaced United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo in the 2-0 win over the Republic of Ireland on Saturday.
Following the victory at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, Lee Carsley opted to start Gomes for the Nations League clash against Finland on Tuesday.
Gomes started in midfield alongside Arsenal star Declan Rice and the Lille player produced a solid overall performance in the 2-0 victory over Finland.
The England midfielder was confident on the ball and was lively in attack for the Three Lions, with Carsley’s men picking up all three points on the night.
Man Utd fans react to Gomes vs Finland
United fans on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, praised Gomes for his performance on his first England start of his career.
However, other Red Devils supporters are already convinced that a return to Old Trafford for Gomes could happen next summer.
Gomes is out of contract with French side Lille in 2025 and United could bring the former Red Devils player back to the club on a free transfer.
“Angel Gomes showing just how bad United are in the transfer market. Should [have] never sold him,” one fan said.
Someone else added: “Hope Angel Gomes sees his deal out at Lille and signs for United on a free.”
“I’d love Angel Gomes back at United,” a third X user tweeted.
Another commented: “Surely I can’t be the only one who can just see United signing Angel Gomes on a free next summer… seems like something that is just going to happen.”
While a fifth posted: “Angel Gomes back to United going to be unreal; gotta be done next season.”
And a sixth wrote: “Bring [Angel] Gomes home on a free next year. Such a gifted baller, massive ceiling.”
“Angel Gomes genuinely looks good; love how he plays. Glad to see he’s improved a lot since he left United,” somebody else said.
An eighth fan added: “Angel Gomes is a brilliant player to watch. I’d take him back at United in a heartbeat.”
