There were high hopes for Angel Gomes at Manchester United before he departed to join Lille in August 2020.

He is now part of the England Under-21 setup and it was on international duty that he filmed an interview with Rising Ballers on YouTube.

Speaking alongside Sheffield United striker Rhian Brewster, Gomes was asked who the most underrated player he has ever played with is.

Gomes chose Jesse Lingard, and talked up the playmaker, who shone on loan at West Ham at the end of last season but has since found gametime hard to come by at United again.

RONALDO NEEDS TO STOP WHINING.

“He went through a phase of being underrated and I had to argue with a lot of people about this,” said Gomes of Lingard. “Jesse is a joke.

“He went through a bad spell and it was like the end of the world, you know how it is in football. You just saw when he went to West Ham what he can do.

“He is a baller. I’ve never seen someone that can run at the same pace for the whole game – on and off the ball – and still do something.

“There would be times in training where I’d be thinking this guy has four lungs! Pre-season, he’s on the runs and then passing, boom. Jesse’s the most underrated player I’ve played with.”

How is Gomes getting on now?

Gomes spent the 2020/21 season out on loan at Boavista but is back at Lille now.

He has made 11 appearances in all competitions, including two in the Champions League. Lille will round off their group stage campaign against Wolfsburg on Wednesday night.

He is yet to score or make an assist this season, but Gomes has forced his way into the Young Lions setup, which he said vindicated the tough choice to leave United in search of gametime.

Lingard will soon need to make a similar decision on whether to leave the club where he came through the ranks to play more regular football, unless his situation changes drastically under Ralf Rangnick.
