Manchester United defender Will Fish continues to give a good account of himself on loan at Aberdeen.
Centre-back Will Fish played in three Manchester United friendly matches in the summer before Hibernian swooped to bring him back on a season loan.
The season long deal was already agreed, but Manchester United wanted to give him some experience in a Red Devils first team shirt too. He impressed in his showings, before returning to the Scottish side.
It was not an easy return for Fish at first, with his manager from last season, Lee Johnson, fired after a poor run of results. But the 20-year-old has remained a key player under new boss Nick Montgomery, and has started in 21 games this season so far, appearing as a substitute in two more.
Will Fish stars v Aberdeen
Will Fish had one of his best games of the season on Sunday as Hibernian won 2-0 at home to Aberdeen, securing their spot in fifth in the table.
Fish was on the scoresheet, scoring at a corner kick in the second half to double his side’s lead. This was his first goal of the season, netting three times during his loan at Hibs last season.
The Manchester United loanee had a strong game all round. Here is a look at his numbers from the victory…
- 1 Goal Scored
- 10 Duels Won
- 65 Touches
- 100% Tackles Won
- 100% Aerial Duels Wom
- 9 Recoveries
This was a confident performance from the Manchester United youngster. His former Red Devils academy teammate Dylan Levitt is also part of the side, a starter in midfield for Hibs.
Hibs want Fish permanently
Hibernian are expected to make a play at the end of the season to try and sign Will Fish on a permanent basis.
Manager Nick Montgomery told the Edinburgh Evening News: “I would love to keep Will, not just this season but on a permanent deal. The kid is still just 20 years old, and he’s growing every week. I think his performances belie his age. He plays like a seasoned professional.
“To watch him in training every day and see the effort he puts into games, he’s really low maintenance. I think he’s got a massive future ahead of him.
“We’re really lucky to have him at the club. And he loves playing for Hibs, loves the club and the boys. Hopefully he’s with us for the season – and who knows what will happen after that?”
Fish could be Evans replacement
Jonny Evans signed this summer on a one-year-deal as extra defensive depth for Manchester United. But he is not expected to stay beyond this season.
There are question marks over Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof‘s futures too, and United are expected to sign a centre-back in the summer.
This season has shown, with injuries, that extra depth is required. Fish could easily take Evans’ spot, if United want him to.
This summer showed United will let young players leave on cheap deals, with Teden Mengi allowed to leave for Luton, so Hibs certainly stand a chance.
