Manchester United’s run of facing La Liga opposition in the Europa League continued with the most recent quarter-final draw.

The reward for getting past Barcelona and Real Betis in the knockout rounds is to face Sevilla in the last eight. United had previously faced Real Sociedad in the group stages.

The match-up against Sevilla is particularly interesting for one man, defender Alex Telles.

Alex Telles is on loan at Sevilla from Manchester United, agreeing a season long deal last August.

Alex Telles eligibility

Alex Telles, 30, featured in pre-season for Erik ten Hag‘s side but was deemed surplus to requirements.

He had made 50 appearances for Manchester United across two seasons since his 2020 move from Sevilla, scoring once.

Telles will be eligible to play for Sevilla against Manchester United in both legs of the Europa League quarter-finals.

There is recent precedent for his happening, when Diogo Dalot starred for AC Milan against Manchester United in the knockout stages in 2021.

Telles is fit again after sustaining a knee injury for Brazil at the World Cup.

He made his return to action in late February and has featured regularly since, starting their last three matches in all competitions.

Telles has been confirmed in Sevilla’s 22-man travelling squad for the fixture.

The South American is playing in a different role to his left-back position at Manchester United, featuring as part of a three-man defence.

United will have to be wary of his set piece ability, which saw him provide four assists for the club last season.

The first leg of the quarter-final will be held at Old Trafford on April 13, with the second leg a week later on April 20 in Seville.
