The FA Cup tie against Arsenal was a game full of redemption stories and Alejandro Garnacho wrote one of his own with a committed display.
From being in the same boat as Marcus Rashford a month ago, Alejandro Garnacho has assisted goals in consecutive games at Anfield and the Emirates Stadium.
Against Arsenal, he started in place of Amad, a position completely alien to him and not conducive to cutting inside on his stronger right foot.
He expertly went outside on his right foot and squared the ball for Bruno Fernandes to give United a lead which would prove pivotal in their quest to take the game to penalties.
In the process, he has ensured that Rashford has an example to learn from in the squad, with the player forcing himself back into the manager’s plans.

Alejandro Garnacho turns it around at Man Utd
Alejandro Garnacho was effectively given a baptism of fire at the Emirates Stadium due to Amad picking up a small injury before the game.
Due to the circumstances surrounding the game, with the referee’s decisions favouring Arsenal and United fighting with ten men, it made for the perfect opportunity for Garnacho to script a memorable comeback or crash and burn in the face of a difficult opponent.
Garnacho ensured the latter wouldn’t happen and with the odds stacked against him, he brought back the selfless and hardworking version of the player fans fell in love with when he broke through.
Stationed as the right-sided attacking midfielder, he continuously ran back, assisted his fullback, and ran himself into the ground in both attack and defence.
In his 80 minutes on the pitch, he had just 27 touches of the ball as Arsenal dominated possession but he didn’t let that get him down and cut back on his effort.
He made the difference when it mattered and finished the game with eight defensive actions, a stat that will arguably please Amorim more than the assist he bagged for Fernandes’ goal
Ruben Amorim kept his word, Marcus Rashford can still step up
Garnacho turning it around and becoming part of Amorim’s plans again after one exclusion reflects well on the Man Utd manager.
Through all the noise surrounding Garnacho and Rashford, Amorim has maintained that the door to a return remains open for them, provided they apply themselves well and work hard.
Garnacho had been the saviour of a dysfunctional team under Ten Hag, given everything and praised most times for being the best of a bad bunch, especially in the last season and a half.
Ruben Amorim’s arrival and a change of system which removed his position completely was his first major challenge in professional football at the top level.
Although it started with some bumps, leading to the nadir of him getting dropped for the Manchester derby, he has shown great resilience and professionalism to come back and force himself into Amorim’s plans again.
It stands in stark contrast to Rashford, who asked for a new challenge in the immediate aftermath of being dropped for a game and hasn’t seen any minutes since.
He only needs to look at Garnacho, who has taken Amorim’s words at face value, worked hard, and revived his Man Utd career. Rashford can still step up if he wants, the door is never closed.
Garnacho and Amorim just proved it.
