Alejandro Garnacho has now done something no Manchester United player has managed since his hero and idol Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009.

It is award season in the world of football and one Manchester United player was up for one of the most prestigious awards around.

Andre Onana was named in the best African XI of the year by FIFA, a deserved accomplishment considering his incredibly busy campaign last season and this in goal.

Alejandro Garnacho was another player nominated for an award, the Puskas Award.

This award is handed to the scorer of the very best goal in football for the qualifying period and Garnacho’s goal against Everton was nominated.

Alejandro Garnacho wins Puskas award

The overhead goal from last season against Everton was simply sensational and for it, Garnacho won the BBC’s goal of the season.

It was a goal which resembled the fabulous Wayne Rooney goal against Man City 11 years ago – although United fans rated Garnacho’s as better.

Now, Garnacho has been named the 2024 Puskas winner.

FIFA announced the goal and captioned it as being the ‘goal of his life’ on X.

The Argentine national team X account also posted to praise Garnacho for his goal.

“#TheBest Alejandro Garnacho won the Puskás Award thanks to the bicycle kick goal he scored against Everton, with Manchester United and in the Premier League.

“The best goal, from one of ours”.

By winning, Garnacho is the first United player to achieve the feat since 2009, a 15-year wait since Ronaldo’s fantastic goal against Porto.

After receiving the award, Garnacho was quoted by Fabrizio Romano with his reaction.

“It was a great goal, of course,” Garnacho explained.

“But there is a lot more to come, and a lot more to look forward to. Thank you for all the support”.

This will be a moment Garnacho remembers forever and is his first major individual achievement.

It will no doubt take the sting off the situation around him being dropped by Ruben Amorim.
