Manchester United fan Rory McIlroy made history on Sunday night by winning the Masters to complete his career Grand Slam.

Rory McIlroy dramatically beat Justin Rose in a sudden-death play-off to win his first Masters title.

Just a few hours before that, Manchester United suffered a 4-1 defeat to Newcastle United at St James’ Park, piling more misery onto Ruben Amorim’s side.

McIlroy is a huge United fan, and he was asked about a potential trip to Old Trafford after earning his Green Jacket in Augusta.

McIlroy showed incredible determination and resilience to win his first Masters title 14 years in the making.

Following his Open win in 2014, McIlroy was invited to Old Trafford to parade the Claret Jug around the stadium. He was asked if he could make a similar trip with his hard-earned Green Jacket.

As quoted by The Mirror, McIlroy joked: “If it can inspire some better play, absolutely.”

Amorim looked ‘shocked’ at United’s performance at St James’ Park, and the Red Devils have been criticised for lacking a winning mentality – something McIlroy showed in abundance on Sunday.

The Northern Irishman would surely be welcomed with open arms by Amorim to speak with the players and try and push an upturn in performance.

As a lifelong fan of the Red Devils, McIlroy would love to invest in United and be a part of the club moving forward.

During the takeover process with Ineos, McIlroy said he would love to join Sir Jim Ratcliffe in owning his beloved United, even if it is just a minute stake.

“I would love to be able to own a tiny percentage of the club I grew up cheering on as a boy,” McIlroy said. “If another opportunity comes my way I will look at it.”

Celebrity takeovers have been growing more popular in English football, with Tom Brady buying a minority stake in Birmingham City and Michael B Jordan investing in Bournemouth.

With Ineos potentially looking to up their stake in United over the next few years, an opportunity could open up for McIlroy to fulfil his boyhood dream.
