Former Manchester United star Aaron Wan-Bissaka has opened up on his exit from the club in summer 2024.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka signed for Manchester United in 2019, becoming one of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first signings.
Wan-Bissaka’s final competitive game for the club was the FA Cup Final, a day he will remember for the rest of his career.
In the summer his stint at the club came to an end, with United accepting an offer from West Ham for his services.
Wan-Bissaka sold
Manchester United decided for a new approach in the summer, cashing in on Aaron Wan-Bissaka and bringing in Noussair Mazraoui.
The decision had been made to sign Mazraoui, and Wan-Bissaka admits there were tough conversations with United over his future.
Wan-Bissaka thanks United for the way the club handled it, admitting that in the wrong hands, the situation could have turned sour.
He also implied that he was torn over his future, before coming to the conclusion that a fresh start was for the best.
He told The Standard: “I spoke to the club and they thought this opportunity was best for me.
“They gave me some time to think about it. In the moment, I didn’t, but I spoke to family and friends about it and we all decided it was the right time.”
“It could have gone another way,” he says. “They said it in a way which kind of opened my eyes to see what was actually best for me.”
Wan-Bissaka contract
Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s contract at Manchester United was expiring, meaning United could have lost him on a free transfer in 2025.
Instead the club were able to cash in on him for approximately the same price paid for Noussair Mazraoui, a satisfactory outcome for all involved.
Mazraoui has been excellent since coming in, and United have no regrets, despite the club’s form generally being poor.
Wan-Bissaka references that the situation could have turned out differently. He’s right, the club could have left him on the bench, and limited his playing time.
