Manchester United take on Atalanta tomorrow in a Champions League fixture which feels like a ‘dare not lose’ game for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his players.
The Italians sit top of Group F with four points whilst United are in third, one point behind.
Cristiano Ronaldo, who hasn’t scored in his last three games, has a modest record against Gian Piero Gasperini’s side during his three full seasons with Juventus.
The 36-year-old has only ever beaten the Bergamo-based club once in six meetings and that came in last season’s Italian Cup final where Andrea Pirlo’s Juventus won 2-1.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has scored three times against the Serie A side, but was also on the receiving end of a 3-0 hammering against tomorrow night’s opponents in a domestic cup quarter-final clash.
Ronaldo’s goals against Atalanta came came in two 2-2 draws between the sides.
Pogba and Cavani have fared better
In contrast to Ronaldo, Paul Pogba has a perfect record against Atalanta with six wins from six games.
Admittedly, when the Frenchman was at Juventus, Atalanta weren’t the force they were today, whereas, Pogba had reached his only Champions League final so far with the Turin side.
Across those games, Pogba was playing in midfield alongside the likes of Andrea Pirlo, Arturo Vidal, Claudio Marchisio or Sami Khedira.
The 28-year-old scored one goal and made one assist in his half a dozen games against Atalanta.
Another Manchester United player who also has an impressive record against Atalanta is striker Edinson Cavani.
The Uruguayan has scored eight goals in eight games against La Dea during his time with Palermo and Napoli.
The 34-year-old was the victor five times against Atalanta and has only been on the wrong end of the result against them once.
Cavani has scored some crucial goals against Atalanta, notably the winner for Palermo in a 3-2 win in 2008/09 and an injury-time winner on the last day of the 2009/10 season.
He also scored a 94th minute equaliser for Napoli in 2011/12 and scored two goals in a 3-2 win in the following season.
Between Ronaldo, Pogba and Cavani, the trio have scored 12 goals against Atalanta in 20 matches and Solskjaer’s world class stars could have a huge bearing on tomorrow’s result which hopefully brings a much-needed three points.
