Three winners and four losers as Manchester United beat Ipswich Town 3-2

It was a dramatic night at Old Trafford as Manchester United finally got back into the win column in the Premier League.

Ruben Amorim has been afforded to one comfortable day in charge of Manchester United which was all the way back in December.

United thrashed Everton 4-0 in this game, and since then any victory has required blood, sweat and tears from the Red Devils.

Wednesday night was no different for United as it took another comeback to eventually overcome Ipswich Town. From 1-0 down, United scored a brace before Patrick Dorgu’s red card put Amorim down to 10 men.

United beat Ipswich 3-2 in the end, with Harry Maguire scoring the all-important winner in the second half.

From the game, there were a handful of winners and losers for United.

Winners

First the winners…

Matthijs de Ligt

In the list of winners, Matthijs de Ligt has to make the cut with his goal putting United 2-1 ahead in the first-half.

The goal from United’s number four was much more important than just scoring – but it should serve as a massive confidence boost for the Dutchman.

De Ligt was also very solid in defence as he won all of his tackles, along with three duels and six recoveries.

Harry Maguire

Like De Ligt, Maguire was among the goals and his strike was once again one which provided decisive, similarly to his goals against Leicester City and Porto.

Maguire was one of United’s best players on the pitch as he not only proved impactful in the offence but also in defence as he won eight duels in the game which was more than any other player.

As the weeks go by, extending Maguire’s contract looks like a better and better decision. He’s become key for Amorim.

Bruno Fernandes

It’s hardly a shock, but the ever-present ability of Bruno Fernandes remains impressive and against Ipswich, he reminded fans of his importance again.

Bruno created four chances in the game and got himself another assist for the season.

Dropping deep to start phases of play, Bruno is the heartbeat of Amorim’s team and these performances are making him the most important member of the squad.

Losers

On the other hand, there were more losers…

Andre Onana

It’s almost weekly that Onana’s performances leave Amorim with his head in his hands and this happened again on Wednesday.

Onana was culpable for the first goal with the miscommunication at the back, and also the second Ipswich goal which he allowed Jaden Philogene’s cross to end up in the net somehow.

The Cameroonian has had a disastrous season and if the money is there this summer, United must be looking for a replacement this summer. Although perhaps Elyh Harrison could be eyeing up his chance if things continue.

Patrick Dorgu

It was a night to forget for Dorgu despite some impressive moments during the first half.

Dorgu was involved in the first goal being conceded, while his night came to an early conclusion with a horror tackle on Omari Hutchinson.

Dorgu caught Hutchinson with his studs on the shin and was very lucky not to have injured the Ipswich attacker. Dorgu will now miss three games due to his straight red card.

Rasmus Hojlund

One player who had a very poor night with not a single positive was Rasmus Hojlund.

The faltering striker has now not scored in 17 games and against Ipswich he never looked like scoring with his 12 touches of the football during the game.

Hojlund didn’t register a single shot and added virtually nothing to United. This just strengthens the need for a player like Victor Osimhen this summer.

Alejandro Garnacho

Alejandro Garnacho was enjoying a strong half down the left, with a handful of exciting moments which got Old Trafford off their seats.

But when United lost Dorgu, Garnacho was taken off for Noussair Mazraoui which didn’t go down well around the ground.

It also didn’t go down well with Garnacho as he seemingly went straight down the tunnel which Amorim has now said he will be speaking with the Argentine about.

Garnacho is struggling to make his mark and become undroppable under Amorim even with the current absences which has him as a loser here in our books.
